Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life,
For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him.
After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. So Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?”

Jesus was calling them to a deeper understanding of who he was, his mission and what real discipleship is
These were disciple after the flesh - primarily concern with getting something from Jesus that pertains to the flesh
Get out to debt
Heal a marriage
Heal their loneliness

Their approach to God is conditional
Some actually give their heart to life
Some turn away after the pain stops or they are unsatisfied
They never recognize that they need a savior
Not to just to save them from the here and now but save them for eternity
1 cor 15:
If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.

On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’
